There are tides in the body
THERE ARE TIDES IN THE BODY
Bryony Gillard and Conway and Young
A2 Limited edition screen print, 2nd edition, 2024
Taken from a quote from Virginia Woolf’s ‘Mrs. Dalloway’, and used as the epigraph in Astrida Neimanis’s ‘Bodies of Water’, these prints were made using tidal mud from the River Avon & are a collaboration with the Conway & Young.
The posters are a little offshoot of my ongoing research into (waste)water. Posing the question, what does it mean to make visible the systems that deal with our bodily waste?”. My project delves into the bodily and civic processes that we’re often unaware of until something goes ‘wrong’. I’m currently thinking about sanitisation systems, flows of power and control, leaky bodies, latency, situated waters and difference, unequal body burdens and lots and lots of toilet stories and humour.
The first run of these prints were made in 2023 at Spike Island Open Studios. Visitors were invited to pull their own print and have conversations with us about the politics of waste. The prints were so popular we sold out super quickly afterwards so we decided to do another run.
The typeface, ‘MARTIN’ is designed by Vocal Type and is described as a non-violent typeface, inspired by remnants of the Memphis Sanitation Strike of 1968.
